At WFGMS, the term Enrichment refers to a class period at the end of the day that is utilized to provide on-going support to students and parents. While it is a study hall for all, certain students receive additional instruction on STAAR (State Standardized Testing) objectives in Reading and Math, while others use the time as GT period, or UIL practice. All students participate in character education studies, test taking skills, and learn about career opportunities. Pep rallies , drills, early releases, and assemblies are also scheduled during this time when possible to avoid taking time away from essential instruction. Finally, this time provides teachers with an opportunity to get to know a small group of students well—that is, their interests, work habits, and their strengths and weaknesses. Enrichment class provides an opportunity to connect to students in a way that is meaningful to them and provide support for them individually as needed.
Students are given an assignment spiral and are expected to use it daily and bring it to enrichment. During this time, students should be prepared to focus and utilize this time wisely. Students who are not in compliance with Enrichment procedures may be excluded from Free Fridays and other fun activities at school, as well as being subject to disciplinary action. Teachers are expected make contact with the parents of any child not utilizing Enrichment time properly.
Free Fridays are intended to support the “Positive Behavior and school-wide accountability program,” and will be granted at the teacher’s discretion. Students who have not earned Free Friday will stay inside, and work on class work with an assigned teacher. Teachers will rotate this duty. While Enrichment time has a social component, it is not an opportunity for students to chat with friends, sleep, or be off task. Students will not be allowed to be out of the classroom during this time. During certain times of the year, exceptions may be made for UIL practice or specialized tutorial, however, students will report to that teacher rather than the Enrichment teacher. Teachers should be actively monitoring and assisting students the entire period rather than grading papers or performing some other duty. The teacher will set the tone for student behavior and attitudes. Enrichment does not require a prep, however, it does require good teaching. All teachers should be engaged with students during this time. It will be as effective as the classroom teacher.
When a teacher needs to miss enrichment--as approved by the principal, it is his or her responsibility to get the class covered by another teacher or para-professional.
Þ Every teacher will write “Focus” and “Homework” on the board daily and will require students to record this information in a planner or homework spiral. All teachers are expected to monitor agendas.
Þ Teachers will assign homework that is appropriate, meaningful, and challenging. For more information, see Homework.
Þ Every enrichment teacher will check assignments daily as students enter the classroom.
Þ Every enrichment teacher will engage students in enriching supplemental curriculum such as character education (as provided in planner or other supplement), career education, content area information, or hobbies and skillsets.
Þ Active monitoring is expected at all times.
