The Music Room at Kidwell Elementary is an exciting place to be. Music is explored in a variety of ways. Children learn concepts such as rhythm, dynamics, tempo, and musical notation. Fine Arts is an important part of the curriculum at Kidwell Elementary!

Each Kindergarten, First and Second grade class has two 30 minute periods of music each week. Pre-K students have one 30 minute period of music each week.

The "do, re, mi's" of Kidwell's Music Department:

Instruments are used to help explore the rhythm or "beat" of music. At Kidwell, there are 20 different rhythm instruments for children to use. There are simple instruments for little hands such as "teddy bear tambourines," "frog bells," and "from maracas." The Second Grade students use Orff instruments such as glockenspiels and xylophones. Everyone uses the other percussion instruments, a few examples being the sticks, tambourines, sand blocks, triangles, and lollipop drums. Dancing using ribbons, streamers, and other props complete the study of rhythm. Dynamics, or the concept of loud and soft, is studied through the use of instruments and listening activities. At Kidwell, children are introduced to all musical styles from classical to country. Tempo, or "fast and slow," is demonstrated by the "beat in my feet." At Kidwell, the music room is a place for everything from galloping to walking feet. Moving the body helps children remember and understand musical concepts.

Children at Kidwell learn about reading music notation on the lines and spaces of the musical staff. We use the MacMillan/McGraw-Hill, "Spotlight on Music"
series with a 400 page music book of songs for First and Second Grade. Skills
included in the series are the musical reading of "Solfa," which is the "do,re,mi" of
music. The music teacher is trained in the Kodaly method of teaching hand signs for
the notes of the staff. This year, we are using a computer program that teaches
the musical notes on the lines and spaces, and basic piano keyboarding.

Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classes have a Music/PTA program that is performed on the stage at the Iowa Park High School Auditorium. The children learn songs and movements to a theme and spend two months perfecting their performance. These programs help the kids learn memorization and performance skills. All the children really look forward to their program each year.  In addition to the programs, children also sing at the Friendly Door Senior Citizen's Center.
